The short version: Your photos never leave your phone. On-device scanning works without any network connection. Optional AI features send only selected label text or pantry item names to our server, which forwards them to OpenAI for processing. We don't sell data. Period.
What Data We Collect
Data That Stays On Your Phone (Never Transmitted)
- Photos and camera data: When you scan a food label, the image is processed entirely on your device using on-device OCR. Photos are never uploaded, transmitted, or stored on any server.
- Ingredient scan results: Your scan history is stored locally on your device only.
- Allergen profile: Your allergen selections and dietary preferences are stored locally on your device only.
- Family profiles: Any family member profiles you create are stored locally on your device only.
Data We May Collect
- Email address: Only if you voluntarily join our waitlist or create an account. Used solely to send you product updates. Never sold or shared.
- Subscription status: If you subscribe to SnapSafe Pro, your purchase is processed by Apple or Google. We receive confirmation of your subscription status through RevenueCat but do not receive or store your payment card details.
- Anonymous analytics: We may collect anonymous, aggregated usage data (e.g., number of scans, app crashes) to improve the app. This data cannot identify you personally.
What We Do NOT Collect
- We do not collect your location
- We do not access your contacts, messages, or other apps
- We do not use facial recognition or biometric data
- We do not collect browsing history
- We do not sell or share personal data with advertisers
- We do not use tracking pixels or third-party ad SDKs
Third-Party Services
OpenAI (Optional AI Features)
When you choose to use optional AI features, selected label text or pantry item names are sent through SnapSafe's server to OpenAI for processing. OpenAI processes this content only to return the requested feature result. OpenAI's privacy policy is available at openai.com/privacy. No images, personal information, or device identifiers are sent to OpenAI.
RevenueCat
We use RevenueCat to manage subscriptions. RevenueCat processes subscription data on our behalf. We do not receive or store your payment card details — all payment processing is handled by Apple or Google. RevenueCat's privacy policy is available at revenuecat.com/privacy.
Apple App Store / Google Play Store
Purchases are processed by Apple or Google. SnapSafe does not store payment card information. Their respective privacy policies apply to payment processing.
Optional AI Features
SnapSafe works on-device by default. Core label scanning, allergen detection, and pantry management all run locally on your phone without any network connection.
SnapSafe also offers optional, user-initiated AI-powered features — AI label explanation, AI pantry auto-fill, and AI recipe generation — that you can use or ignore at any time. Here is exactly what happens when you choose to use them:
- What is sent: When you tap an AI feature, only the selected label text (extracted OCR text from your label scan) and/or selected pantry item names are sent to SnapSafe's server endpoint. For AI label explanation and pantry auto-fill, the selected label text is sent. For AI recipe generation, your selected pantry item names are sent. Photos and images are never uploaded.
- How it is processed: SnapSafe's server forwards your request to OpenAI, our AI service provider, which processes the text and returns the result (explanation, pantry data, or recipes). OpenAI processes this content solely to provide the requested feature. SnapSafe does not store the submitted text or AI responses on our servers after processing is complete.
- What is NOT sent: Your photos, camera images, location, device identifiers, allergen profile, dietary preferences, or any personal information are not included in AI requests.
- When it is sent: Only when you explicitly tap an AI feature button. No data is sent automatically or in the background.
- Opting out: AI features are optional. You can use SnapSafe's full on-device scanning, pantry tracking, and allergen detection without ever using an AI feature. On-device features work fully without any network connection.
- Credit tracking: We track your monthly AI usage count locally on your device to enforce fair-use limits. This count resets monthly and is not transmitted to any server.
Not Medical Advice
SnapSafe is an informational tool. AI-generated label explanations and recipe suggestions are not medical, dietary, or allergy advice. Always verify food labels yourself and consult a qualified healthcare professional for allergy, dietary, or health-related decisions.
Data Security
- All on-device data is stored using encrypted local storage
- We use industry-standard security practices
- We do not maintain servers that store your personal health or dietary data
Children's Privacy
SnapSafe does not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you are a parent and believe your child has provided personal information, please contact us.
Your Rights
- Access your data (it's all on your device)
- Delete your data by uninstalling the app or clearing app data
- Opt out of any email communications at any time
- Request information about what data we hold
California Residents (CCPA)
We do not sell personal information. We do not share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising.
EU/EEA Residents (GDPR)
We process minimal personal data. Our legal basis for processing email addresses (when provided) is consent. You may withdraw consent at any time.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy from time to time. We will notify you of any material changes through the app or via email.
